Seen as I am sitting on the couch sneezing and drinking tea
(yup, I managed to ge ill a few weeks before handing in my bachlor thesis) I
thought: why not write for fun a little bit. Then I realized my brain was not
in the right state to come up with anything deep or exciting, so I thought: I
will just sit down and write about what I´ve been doing recently. But after
contemplating that idea, I realized that all I´ve BEEN doing is writing,
working, getting drunk and watch TV shows. Oh yes, the single life is such a
thrill. Well, I´ve rediscovered my favourite show from when I was a teenager
and that is „The O.C.“. So, as I´ve been binging on about two seasons in the
last weeks, here is my rambling about that...
Where do I even start? This show is absolutely hilarious.
See, I thought after 10 years, the jokes may have gotten old or just borderline
offensive (which is how I feel about quite a few things I used to love), none
of that has happened with „The O.C.“ I nearly choked laughing at Seth Cohen´s
sarcastic comments last night. So there´s that. Also the drama on this show was
just unbeatable. Every time you thought it couldn´t get worse, they had
something new and even crazier up their sleeves. It never got boring but unlike
many other shows, the characters always stayed believable and the story kept
the right amount of crazy.
But there are some things I see in a different light now,
than when I first watched it at 13. For
example, the parent´s motives are much more understandable when you get older.
Not that I´m making excuses for Julie Cooper, altough she did redeem herself
later on, I do think that when you´re a teen, all you see is the „evil parent“
making the child´s life difficult. Now when I watch it, I think „Goddamn,
Marissa! Don´t be such a drama queen. Your mum´s just trying to help you!“
That´s another thing. The only characters I will defend whatever may come are
Ryan and Summer. Marissa was so self-absorbed, she even made her parent´s
breakup all about her. Seth was funny, but really annoying at times and (sorry
to my cousin who loves him) just as egoistic as her. The Coopers were just the
prime example for a fucked-up family while the Cohens were awesome but did have
their skeletons (cheating, alcohol abuse, corruption).Tbh I make excuses for
Ryan because he´s in a difficult situation and had a very dark past. Plus Ben Mckenzie
is a total BAE. And Summer, well, she may have started as a party-obsessed,
shallow, rich chick but ended up working for a charity and studying at Brown,
all while dealing with her „it´s all about me“ bestie and boyfriend.
No here´s what I hated: the whole Lindsay-storyline. I don´t
think I ever despised a TV show-character more than her. Everything that Jimmy
Cooper did. He was the absolute worst excuse for a dad/husband and I don´t
understand why people constantly gave him a million chances. Alex leaving the
show. She was awesome. When Johnny died. Why would they kill him off? Taylor in
season 3. The whole comic book thing, what was that about. And maybe the fact
that all these 16-year olds have more baggage than I do at 23. But I guess
that´s why it´s worth watching. I do realize this may have been the least
interesting blogpost I ever did, but I had to get that out i think. So, yeah. Let´s
move on now.
