Style Icons

As I have been sick for WEEKS now I´ve had a lot of time sitting at home. Clearly I used it well by rewatching Sex and the City and American Horror Story and reading way too many Blogposts on Thought Catalog. But I´ve also gotten back into reading. At the moment I´m loving books about style and I really enjoyed Alexa Chungs "It" in which she lists her style icons. So I thought I´d try and do the same:

Number one has got to be Audrey Hepburn. If I had to choose the most elegant and beautiful woman that ever walked this earth it would be her. From writing my school dissertation about her to having a giant picture of her hanging in my room for 10 years she has influenced me in many ways. My favourite Audrey-film is of course "Breakfast at Tiffanys" and pretty much everything she wears in that film looks effortlessly cool. From crazy hats to pigtails, somehow she makes it work. I especially love that white oversized shirt Holly Golightly chills in combined with her crazy sleeping mask and Brigit Bardot hair. I definitely don´t look that stylish on a hungover morning in bed. When I first watched this movie I had never seen anyone so chic and cool and ever since then Audrey Hepburn has been my biggest role model. I could go on about the revolutionary portrayal of women and how Holly Golightly was basically a promiscuous party girl in the 60s, but let´s stick to style.

As a teenager who was obsessed with everything British, obviously I watched Skins. I know I am not alone in this, but I always loved Effy Stonem´s style and makeup in the series. I have lost count of all the times I tried recreating her famous eye look (if you have no clue what I´m talking about, google it. you´ll know the one) and failed miserably. Because I am not Kaya Scodelario and somehow I can´t get my eyes to look like that. Also I couldn´t pull of fishnet stockings or shirt-length dresses like her, but her more grungy looks definitely made their way into my wardrobe on some level. Messy hair and slightly smudged black eyeliner are still a look I believe in when it comes to partying.

Speaking of messy hair- when I was about 15 I would try to figure out my style by google searching pictures of Sienna Miller, who always looks a little undone and yet amazing. I also really liked Rachel Bilsons laid-back style so these were the celebrities I looked up to when it came to picking my outfits in the morning. For a long time I had a poster of all my favourite looks inside my closet for daily inspiration.

When it comes to elegance noone does it quite like Leighton Meester playing Blair in Gossip Girl. I learned a lot about fashion and brands from those books and the TV show. I would like to point out that she basically dressed herself in nothing but A-list designer outfits and expensive lingerie, yet she even looked flawless in that pink "I love NY" jumper that one time. If I ever need fashion inspiration on how to look perfect, I look to her.

The final person that never fails to inspire me is my mum. She hates the cut-out jeans and dirty boots I live in while she is always wearing heels and some costume I´m not cool enough to pull off. And while she inspires me to dress up a bit more (and look less like a homeless man that stacked all of his jewellery around his neck) as a kid I always thought my mum was the most beautiful woman with pinned up hair, some oversized Shirt and washed out skinny jeans. And I still do.

10 Things I Learned At University

1: How to succesfully bullshit on a test/essay.
2: No matter how hard you work, someone will always be better than you.
3: Stressing out for hours is NOT studying. Better do it all the day before than waste your time panicking/procrastinating.
4: If you´re at a small university like me, you need to keep all your romances very VERY private.
5: Some days you´ll love what you´re studying and some days you´ll hate it with a passion and will want to drop out. This is totally normal.
6: Wine can actually increase your productivity (see also: functioning alcoholic), but it can also make you fall asleep on your books.
7: Uni is very different to school seen as you´re actually expected to enjoy your tasks.
8: But some things merely change a bit: gossip about who kissed whom at the school dance turns into gossip about who slept with whom at what party.
9: You will probably feel like an alcoholic most of the time. But some good advice I´ve been given on that topic: "Alcoholism is fine as long as you´re still a student."
10: Coffee becomes your main source of energy.

I could probably come up with about 100 of these, but yeah basically. Especially the drinking thing. Us students solve all out problems with tequila and the only reason noone judges us is BECAUSE we´re still at university. The sad truth: we won´t be forever. Ooops.
