Some things about me

I am the kind of person, who would spend 20 bucks on the "right" lipstick without blinking an eye, but find a 1,20 tube ticket overpriced. I tip well. I drive a little crazy and I get agressive at slow people but I try my best to be reasonable. I get emotional quickly and can easily cry about happy things. I find it difficult to explain a matter to someone even if I completely understand it myself. I'm perhaps the moodiest person I know, especially when I'm PMSing. I hate injustice and I hate people being disrespectful. I hate racists and homophobes and sexists. I hate sexism more then anything. When someone calls me "sweetheart" and is generally being super irritating and patronizing, that makes me want to punch them.

I love good coffee. The smell, the taste, all of it. The whole experience. I adore gin. A gin and tonic needs to have almost as much gin as tonic. It tastes best when it´s ice cold. A good quality tonic is also essential. Same goes for the gin obviously. I mean, I think I´m quite fussy with my gin and tonic. I prefer cucumber to lime. Just don't put a lemon in it. Oktoberfest is a tradition for me. The tradition of behaving like a brat and getting shitfaced. I love the dresses and the food and the beer and frankly, I don´t care that it is nothing but consumerism and a giant bender.

I love hiphop music and pop, but my hearts beats for guitars and drums and loud, sweaty bands. If I could listen only to one song for the rest of my life it would be „Knocking on heaven´s door“ by Bob Dylan. Or „Smells Like Teen Spirit“ by Nirvana. I´m not great at decisions.

Audrey Hepburn is one of my biggest inspirations. And so is my mum. I believe in something. I believe that your life is valued in who you choose to be and how you handle the best and the worst of it. Not how much money you own or how many people know your name. I like drinking and prefer cozy, small bars to crazy, loud and overcrowded clubs. I wear red lipstick when I don't feel pretty enough. I change my hair a lot. The most important thing to me are my friends and family. And my view on myself. I enjoy being single. I enjoy talking and giving advice. I like white wine and long nights. I hate mornings. I believe that everyone is a story and you should make it a good one. I'm scared of loosing people, terrifyed actually. I procrastinate a lot. I work hard when I have to. I love sleeping in. I prefer the city to the countryside. But I do like a bit of solitude every now and again. I like my men with beards and tattoos and strong shoulders. I like people that will go on an adventure for no reason. I like organising. I like being spontaneous. I like holidays in Italy. I like rain and thunderstorms. I find them soothing and romantic. Reading is one of my favourite pastimes. A good TV show or movie often have the potential to make me obsessed. I write a lot, but never show it to anyone. I have no desire to be rich or famous as long as I'm content and happy.

This may have come across as quite self-obsessed, but I really enjoy talking about all these things and sharing my views, ideas and opinions with others. As well as learning from how they might see the world. So I thought I´d sum a few of these things up in a neat, little blogpost.

Things you´ll have to deal with when dating a media student

My brain is literally empty from writing my bachelor thesis so this week I decided to post something I wrote a while ago. I shall be philosophical again next time - so until then, here is what dating a media student is like:

- late night power writing shifts before a deadline are the norm. They are often fuelled by coffee, wine and energy drinks. Do not try to distract us as this is literally when we get 90% of the work done. And if you try to suggest we should have started earlier, prepare for a death stare.
- Constantly discussing ads. Be it in the cinema, when watching TV or after driving past a new poster. We have an opinion on all of them and won´t hestitate to explain to you in detail what we would have done differently.
- A not at all constant working schedule. We´ll have weeks of doing nothing (apart from stalking peoples social media and watching videos for „creative inspiration“) and then BOOM – you won´t see us or hear from us for days when we´ve got a project on.
- Helping us out when it comes to things like carrying equipment, proof reading articles and judging designs is a must.
- All we know how to cook is coffee. Fine, maybe that´s just me. But in my opinion media students are far too impatient to actually invest time in cooking. We can´t even wait for GIFs to load how the hell do you expect us to be patient troughout an entire recipe?
- We will point out every spelling mistake anyone has ever made. We know this is annoying. We really do. But spelling and grammar are so important to us, we just can´t resist. We are sorry if you hate us for this.
- Partying during the week isn´t a problem. Seen as we often work on the weekends and have days off on Mondays. Nothing is constant in media so a spontaneous holiday can be possible any day. Sadly, so is a month of sitting in front of a screen nonstop from the moment you open your eyes in the morning to the moment you close them at night.
- Generally, we drink a lot. Mainly beer. And strong liquor. I don´t think I ever met anyone respectable in media that liked fizzy stuff or sweet cocktails. The reason is simple: when we get drunk, we get REALLY drunk. And beer is just fuel to us, like a sandwich or a can of coke. We don´t count it as alcohol. When we´re feeling fancy we´ll have a glass of cheap wine to „get creatie enough to finish that article“ (don´t blame us!)
- We are sick of hearing people with no clue talk about media like it´s all super simple and what we´re doing is basically irrelevant. We get it: middle aged people still refuse to "get on that Internet". Which is probably for the best. But if you are with us in those situations please make sure we don´t murder anybody.
- We read a lot so we tend to use elaborate words sometimes when it isn´t necessary. Just because we can. And because we´re used to it. We´re not stuck-up assholes, I swear.
- Even though we´re usually super communicative and we love people, we still hate giving talks with a passion.
- We´re addicted to our smartphones and we know how antisocial we´re being. Try and understand that to us social media is more than just a hobby. If we get to excessive, demand that we put away the phone for dinner or take us somewhere with no wifi and watch us slowly die. Your call.
- Watching a movie with us means analyzing everything from the characters clothing to the color grading. We still enjoy the film, but believe me we will know who the killer is way before you do, because we have been seeing all the clues in the cinematography.
- Anytime we see a „web designer“ portrayed as a nerdy twentysomething hacking away at his computer in the dark, we laugh because everything about this is ridiculous. Okay, maybe not the twentysomething bit.
- Being amazed at technology is not our thing. As hipster as it sounds: we probably knew about that „new app“ a long time ago. Maybe we even worked on it. Just saying.
- Whenever someone types https://www... into their browser letter by letter, we die a little. Please don´t be that person.
- We have no idea what we want. Why the hell do you think we´re studying media?!?
- A good font or a well thought-out logo can make us fangirl. For real. It is like porn. Design porn. I genuinely have books that consist of nothing but ads and logos. No text. Literally just ads. I adore them!

Just to be clear: these are not ALL things I do. I mean, most of them. But I picked a lot of it up over the past 2 1/2 years of attending a media school. You meet the craziest people there tbh. Wow, I just realized that this is probably my last chance to be relatable as a "student" - which is a weird thing to think about but oh well. I will now go back to writing about my empirical data and whatnot. Bye.

The year ahead

I've been working on my bachelor thesis the past few days and even tough there is not nearly an end in sight, I feel almost like uni is already over. I have come to realize that it is ABOUT TIME to figure out what the hell I want to do next.
Since I came back from London almost three years ago (in tears I might add) I've been wanting to go back. But now it's like "You're 23. How many more chances are you going to get to try things out and go travelling?" So I'm saving up money and building up courage to just go for it on my own. I've never been to the westcoast of the US which is something I've always wanted to do. Now if everything works out - which isn't too likely let´s be real - I'll spend a couple of weeks in LA, San Francisco and New York later this year. Job-wise I have NO clue what to do. Literally none. I am looking at vacancies in different cities but haven't actually gotten off my arse and applied anywhere.
Real life is hard. Maybe I want to have a solid income, live in a flatshare and just get an idea of what it might be like. Or maybe travelling and working freelance jobs is more like it? I don't know, man. But this year will be full of decisions and possibilities and I am terrified, yet very excited about everything that´s to come...
