I decided to blog about something very
close to my heart this week. And that, of course, is music. I am a firm
believer that good music can solve just about anything. It makes you feel
understood at sad times, so you can cry your eyes out when needed and then move
on. It also pumps you up for parties, makes your heart jump at concerts and
just generally lifts your mood. I sing along really badly and go to gigs
whenever possible. Loving music must be in my blood as my mother works at
concerts and used to do a lot if catering for various bands. She once told me I
was backstage at a „Bon Jovi“ concert just a few weeks after being born.
Whenever I´m asked what type of music I prefer I usually say „anything with
guitars“ which practically means that if I could only ever listen to one genre
it would be indie/rock/alternative. It doesn´t, however, mean that I don´t
absolutely love rap, hiphop, pop and electronic music as well. I think at the
moment there´s a lot of great music around and I always feel like at the
beginning of the year I discover new artists and tracks. So I decided to share
some of my favourite musical discoveries here.
I am a sucker for old school rock songs
and my Dad has made me listen to „ACDC“ and „The Rolling Stones“ for as long as
I can remember. Therefore it´s no surprise that I love a good guitar riff so much.
Among my favorite bands are „Arctic Monkeys“, „Fall out Boy“, „McFly“ and „The
1975“. In my teenage years I also loved „My Chemical Romance“, „Panic! at the
Disco“, „The Kooks“, „Plain White T´s“, „Rooney“, „Boys Like Girls“ and so on.
At the moment I´m excited for the new „1975“ album which will be released next
week. Although I´m not too keen on the first song I heard from that record,
this band always finds new ways to surprise me. I have rediscovered some older
tunes and put them into a neat Spotify playlist to remind myself of the days
when I´d overdo it with the smudged eyeliner and took guitar lessons.
When it comes to rap and hiphop I will
always have a special place in my heart for Eminem. But Kendrick Lamar is
currently smashing it, too. Unpopular opinion: I´m not a huge fan of Beyonce OR
Rihanna. I do appreciate their music and their way of selling it, though. Kanye
West is a great artist but possibly not the most sympathetic guy, let´s be
honest. If any rap song can get me it´s „Look at me now“ which - when drunk
enough - I will gladly shout along to.
Recent discoveries include a band called
„HONNE“ (which do incredibly beautiful slow, melancholic music) as well as
„Twenty One Pilots“ and „Our Last Night“. I also got into Trap lately, which I
totally blame Vine for. It is just so catchy and there are some badass remixes out
on YouTube.
I have to admit, I genuinely enjoyed some
songs from „Justin Bieber´s“ current album, „Sorry“ is just such a tune! Another
guilty pleasure is singing along to „Taylor Swift“ when I´ve had a glass of
wine of two. Anyway, I think there is no such thing as „bad“ and „good“ music,
it all just comes down to individual taste. For instance, I really dislike „Meghan
Trainor“ while some people seem to love her! Then again, everyone is entitled
to their own taste and when it comes to music, all I can say is: try
everything! Especially in the age of YouTube, Soundcloud and Spotify, it has
never been easier to discover new things! To end things on a high note, here
are five of my all time favourite songs:
Menswear - The 1975
I love love love this! song It really
introduced me to a whole new kind of music and I love the fact that for almost
two minutes there are no lyrics. Then when Matt Healy does start singing it is
just so perfect and the song text is so VERY 1975.
Radioactive - Imagine Dragons
I HAD to mention this awesome band and of
course the song. It is so epic and I never get tired of listening to it. There
are some great covers of this around and it sounds even more incredible live.
Pumped up Kicks - Foster the People
Kind of a one-hit thing. But, oh my god,
this song. It is almost 5 years old and yet I will always sing along when it
comes on the radio as it´s another one you just never grow tired of.
Smells like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Of course I had to include this. I am as
obsessed with Kurt Cobain as the next girl and this song just amazingly
captures the pain and anger that he was all about yet you can totally party to
it. Really though, who doesn´t love this song?
Do I Wanna Know - Arctic Monkeys
I have loved this band since I was about
15, but this album was something else. At lot of my friends who normally aren´t
into that kind of music love it too. And if all guitar riffs were as powerful
and capturing as this one, the world would truly be a better place. Hands down
my favorite AM song.
