I always say this but writing is like therapy to me. I feel like being able to express things by writing them down is a big advantage as you kind of get the toughts out of your head. But I do find it very difficult to motivate myself sometimes. To actually sit down, close those seemingly 150 tabs in my browser, maybe put on some non-distracting background music, open Word and just go for it. Other times like today it comes really easily. I guess that is due to how stressed/busy you already are. I for one really don´t like adding to my crazy schedule even more so I kind of let this blog slip a bit recently. But things are getting a little less busy now so here I am.
Because I want to make writing into a „real“ job for me I´m
always trying to find inspiration. Mostly that comes when you least expect it
tough. About 80% of my blogposts I write on train rides, in waiting rooms or
while I´m out somewhere for dinner. And I get the most productive after 10pm.
Whenever I do need to motivate myself though I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
I am very organized already but before I need to write something I usually
clear my workspace so that nothing can distract me. Also I always have a cup of
coffee or tea there (it helps me think) and when I am at home I will most
likely be wearing sweatpants. Basically get yourself as comfortable as you can
and minimize your distractions (putting my phone out of reach really helps!).
Another thing for when I want to get focussed is reading. I have discovered
some amazing books my Beau Taplin recently. He writes the most beautiful poetry
and manages to put things into words that I can scarily relate to yet have a
hard time expressing. His work is so good and inspiring that usually I want to
create something myself after just a couple of pages.
Other good things for getting creative are walks, good
conversations, more coffee, some background noise (if it doesn´t distract you)
and last but not least a big, fat, scary deadline. It´s what motivates me to
get most of my stuff done to be honest. I´m not too proud of that, but well...it
works.
