Sooo something happened to me today. I was just on my way back home after a long day at the dentist/uni and probably not in the best mood, when I remembered I had to pick some concert tickets up on the way. (I didn´t want to pay extra money for them to be shipped to my house) so I´m driving to the ticket place and on the way I see a homeless man sitting on the pavement and looking like he is freezing his butt off.
Obviously I kept driving but for some reason the sight of him didn´t let me go so when I finally got my tickets (In case you were wondering I´ll be watching the 1975 in March!!) I saw this little coffeeshop in the building and I thought "Why not buy dinner for the homeless guy?" I mean a sandwich is definitely gonna help him out more than 50 cents, no?
The only problem was that there was THE biggest queue in the world but I thought oh well you know if I´m being nice I might as well make some effort. So after standing in line for a good 10 minutes I finally ordered two sandwiches for the guy when the woman told me they didn´t take any cards. Great. So I rushed to a cash machine, got 20 euro out (and payed an additional 3,49 to get the money -yay!) and finally had the food in my hand.
On the way back to my car I was getting quite concerned that maybe the man had left or we wouldn´t want the food. For all I know he could think I´d dropped it or something. But then I thought what if I make his day? And suddenly I realized why exactly i was doing this...not just because I wanted to be nice but because making someone else happy lifts your own mood as well and I really needed that.
Soooo long story short he was there and happily took the food and he smiled at me and thanked me.
What I´m trying to say here is not "Oh. Look at me I´m such a selfless person! Wow, ain´t I amazing?" it is that sometimes the best way to cheer yourself up is to cheer someone else up whether it be a friend, your mum or a complete stranger.
I´ve always been saying that I miss the English politeness and niceness here and so I thought why not start it up a little myself? So the next time walk that old lady that looks a bit confused over the street, go help that little girl that has lost her mum at the mall or drop your work to get icecream for your heartbroken friend. It´s only small gestures that can make someone else´s day.
And you know what they say...what goes around comes back around...
